How was your summer? Most likely, it was similar to mine:
- You still worked, but you also found time to be with family, with it being the longest stretch of the year when the kids are around in such abundance.
- Your sleep schedule fell off pretty quickly. Late nights became the norm, and early mornings were compromised since the kids didn’t need to catch a bus.
- Workouts were less consistent, as you were outside running around anyway, and hitting the gym became a negotiation between "me time" and "family time."
- Eating the foods you enjoy at BBQs, 4th of July celebrations that seemed to last a month, and gatherings with family and friends made sticking to the diet and lifestyle you worked on since January nearly impossible.
- You thoroughly enjoyed the change of pace, time off work, vacations, and moments together, and most likely faced some challenges along the way that disrupted your plans.
Summer is like that. It is wonderful, and it zips by way too quickly.
Suddenly, the school year beckons, and it is time to regroup, restart the schedule, and recommit to healthy habits moving forward.

Start Again Without the Guilt
First of all, with the many ways you may have let things slip in terms of your fitness, health habits, and sleep, it’s important not to feel too guilty about it.
Instead, be grateful you had the opportunity to change things up. The important part isn't dwelling on the time and effort lost, but rather starting again today to make the future awesome.
Secondly, look at the photos and videos on your phone from your summer adventures. Feel gratitude for your life, whether everything went perfectly or there were a few hiccups along the way.
At this time four years ago, I was recovering from a leg injury that derailed my summer in late July, followed by surgery and a major change in plans. I looked back at the photos from before the accident and thought, Wow, it really was an awesome summer.
Until I ruined my leg.
But even then, I saw the love from family, friends, and strangers who came to my rescue, and I felt gratitude... while lying in bed recovering.
View the challenges you have faced as resilience training for getting through the hard parts life throws at you.
Make a New Promise
Third, make a NEW Promise.
Everything shouldn't be a promise, but the right things should be. Set goals, then make the most important ones the promises that are non-negotiable.
For example:
Set a GOAL to get to the gym or work out every day.
Make a PROMISE to move every day, no matter what.
There’s a difference.
It means that if the gym eludes you because of your schedule and a full workout isn’t possible, at least park a little farther away at the grocery store, take the stairs, or find any way to fit in some movement.
That’s a Promise you can keep—and feel great about.
The same is true with eating better, creating a more consistent sleep schedule, and getting back on the right track.
Goal vs. Promise
Goal: Get to the gym or complete a full workout every day.
Promise: Move every day, no matter what.
Improving My Sleep
One of my promises to myself is improving my sleep, which is something I haven’t focused on my entire life. It simply hasn’t been a priority.
That has caught up with me.
I am now incapable of getting a naturally good night’s sleep.
Whereas my wife is a professional sleeper. It is astounding how good she is at it. She wakes up every morning completely refreshed. I have never woken up feeling like I truly slept through the night.
I have a lot of work to do.
Some of the changes I'm making include:
- Going to bed earlier (I have gone to bed around 1:00 AM or later for 30 years.)
- No phone for an hour before bed.
- No TV or visual distractions before bed.
- No emails, social media, texts, or potentially bothersome messages for two hours before bedtime.
- I have begun sleeping with earplugs for the first time in my life, and it makes a massive difference. Even with my "Dad needs to hear everything" mentality, now that the kids are older, things are changing.
- I track my sleep with my watch and may get an Oura Ring soon for even more information.
- Tracking my sleep helps me realize what I can do better during the day to get more restorative sleep, such as working out earlier rather than later, the importance of cold plunge timing, using the sauna before bed, and what to eat and drink.
What are some of the changes you're working on at this time of year?
